What is Cheddar cheese?
Cheddar is a semi-hard cheese, probably the most consumed cheese in the world, and it is believed that it was first made around the late 12th Century.
More specifically, Cheddar originated from the Gorge or caves in the town of Cheddar that were used to store the cheese. The constant temperature and humidity of the caves provided a perfect environment for maturing the cheese.
Cheddar is naturally a creamy white colour, but may be coloured with annatto to give it an orange appearance; there is no taste difference.
Today, Cheddar is the most popular cheese in the United Kingdom; over 300,000 tonnes are consumed each year1. The value of British cheese sales is higher than tea!2
